Freight Transport in Alaska: The Haul of the Wild

We have studied in class that transportation is a key issue in logistics. The transportation strategy is a really important decision for any company. Among the different methods of transport, the most typical ones are by road, by air or by sea. The choice of one or other will depend on two factors: provide the required service level and minimize costs.

However, sometimes there are other additional problems or difficulties on transportation like weather or geography. This is the case of Alaska; where weather conditions are often extreme and the population, despite being small, is very disperse.

There some places that are not accessible by road and the unique solution is by sea or by air, although that kind of transportation is more expensive than by truck.

In the article, different methods of transportation are mentioned as well as the benefits and challenges that each mode of transport has.

Alaska transportation is a logistic challenge but moving freight across Alaska has become easier over the years.
